Bye Bye Dairy
So your baby has a Milk Protein Allergy. You decide to stick with breastfeeding and begin reaserching a dairy free diet and all that entails. You head to the fridge to eliminate the common dairy products like, milk, butter and creamer…
But what do you replace it with?
When I first found out my 3rd baby had a Milk Protein Allergy (to read our story click here) I did not think it was a big deal to give up dairy. “I don’t really eat a lot of dairy” I thought to myself…
So I started reading labels.
To my surprise there were a lot of foods that had milk protein in them. Even more fun, was learning all of the hidden names for milk protein!!
Basically there is a lot of trial and error in finding products that work for you. I’m not really a picky a eater so replacing things like cows milk with almond milk wasn’t a big deal to me. However some items I had to learn to love and some items I wish I had known about sooner!
Okay, so here’s my list of dairy free products that I’ve found, used and deemed tolerable for living a dairy free life. For the most part I was pleasantly surprised at the substitutes I found.
First item (and possibly the most important)
I tried a couple different brands before I found what I like. I also had to play around with the mixture. For me a splash of Calfia Coffee Creamer (made with almondmilk) and a teaspoon of sugar does the trick just fine. This creamer has a hint of coconut cream in it, which really makes for a nice flavor. (If your local grocer doesn’t carry Calfia, then go for the Silk Almond Creamer)
So I’m sure you figured I’d say almond milk. But I highly recommend checking out the different products that Silk carries. They have protein and fiber milk, a protein and nut milk (packing 10g of protein per glass!). They have a cashew milk, coconut milk and the list goes on! Check it out, you will be sure to find something that suits your style.
I had a friend recommend Earth Balance Butter to me and it was a hit with everyone in my household! For us it has replaced butter for good. Highly recommend!
Luckily my local grocery store carries quite a bit of dairy free products. So I was thrilled when I came across a dairy free yogurt. Silk makes a dairy free yogurt that is delicious! Last but not least
Finding a protein powder was crucial for me. Obviously whey was out of the question, so what did that leave me?
A plant based protein powder!
This particular Protein Powder recommends mixing with water, however I prefer it with almond milk (go figure). Also you will want to get a shaker to mix it in since it doesn’t delute down as well as regular protein powders.*
*Mix 2 scoops of powder, a 1/2 cup of almond milk and a small banana in a blender for a delicious power smoothie!
